New Year Decluttering Tips

As the end of December quickly approaches, you are probably thinking about your resolutions for the New Year. Why not make a commitment to declutter your home? If you're anything life the average person, you probably have a lot of stuff around your home that could stand to be reorganized or stored away. After the whirlwind of the holidays, this will probably be a resolution you could really benefit from committing to. Here are some tips to get you started.

Start With An Inventory

Don't overwhelm yourself by pulling everything out of your closets, your drawers, from under the bed and anywhere else you have stuff tucked away, all at one time. Doing so is often the quickest way to failure. Instead, take the time to look over the areas you want to organize and create an inventory.

Within your inventory, denote what you plan to give away and for the items you plan to keep, determine where you plan to store them away. Performing this step first will keep you from overwhelming yourself and give you the opportunity to plan your attack.

Perform A Holiday Exchange

Especially if you plan to give your children a number of new toys over the holiday season, it's a good idea to consider conducting a holiday exchange. A holiday exchange is basically a process that requires your children to give away one old toy for each new toy that they received.

You can involve your children in the process by allowing them to pick both the toy they want to give away and the charity to which they will donate them to. This won't just allow them to assist you with the decluttering process, but it will also teach them the importance of giving.

Invest In A Storage Unit

If you have an excessive amount of stuff that you need to organize or store away, consider investing in a storage unit. Storage units are available in a variety of sizes and they can also be rented in a climate controlled or non-climate controlled option.

Generally, if storing away all your extra stuff in your home will require you to give up space you need to use on a regular basis, this probably means you could probably use a storage unit.

Decluttering won't just make your home more organized, but it will also help increase functionality in your home. Make sure you start off the new year right with a company like AAA Flying Trolley Self Storage.
